This laser treatment addresses pigmentation concerns such as sun-induced freckles and age spots, as well as melasma, including stubborn melasma triggered by hormonal changes like pregnancy. It uses a high-energy green laser with variable spot sizes, allowing the treatment to be customised to your skin's specific requirements. Most treatments are finished in minutes, though some may take up to 30 minutes depending on the areas and concerns treated.
Uneven skin tone occurs when the body produces excess melanin, the pigment that determines hair, skin and eye colour and helps protect the skin from UV rays. Melanin overproduction can result from genetics, age, stress, hormonal changes and sun exposure, as well as injuries, acne and other skin trauma. The laser delivers wavelengths of light energy that are absorbed in the skin, delivering targeted thermal heating without harming surrounding tissue. With each laser pulse, hyperpigmentation beneath the skin gradually diminishes.
The laser can feel similar to a quick rubber band snap against the skin. A cooled treatment tip is used in contact with the skin to protect it and improve comfort, and a topical anaesthetic may be available from your provider. Afterwards, some redness and swelling can be expected; for full-face treatments, swelling tends to peak 24 to 48 hours after the session. You can typically wear makeup and return to normal activities immediately.
The number of treatments varies based on the individual, the specific skin condition and its severity. Many people notice substantial improvement after one to two sessions, while a typical plan for optimal results involves three to five sessions spaced about four weeks apart. Improvement of treated spots is long lasting, but new spots may appear over time with ongoing ageing and sun exposure. Your provider will discuss a customised plan at consultation, and results vary between individuals.
A consultation determines your suitability. This treatment may not be appropriate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have used certain prescription acne medications in the past six months, take anticoagulant medication, or have undergone gold therapy. Caution applies for people with vitiligo, a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, or open wounds. Treatment is avoided over tattoos, permanent makeup, metal or electronic implants, and suspicious or atypical pigmented lesions, and is not performed if you are being treated for skin cancer. A minimum distance is kept from pacemakers and defibrillators.
