What it is

SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling device that is TGA approved and administered in a clinical setting. Microneedling works below the skin's surface to stimulate the skin's own renewal, and SkinPen is clinically validated for reducing the appearance of neck wrinkles and facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and over. A standard course involves three non-invasive treatments spaced about 30 days apart, with improvements lasting up to six months after the final session.

What it can address

SkinPen microneedling is versatile and can be used for a range of concerns, including acne scars, trauma and surgical scars, acne, dark spots and hyperpigmentation, rough or dry skin, uneven or dull skin tone, enlarged pores, fine lines and moderate-to-severe wrinkles.

What to expect

The procedure takes about an hour. On day one, expect mild redness and swelling similar to sunburn. Around days three to four the skin may become dry and flaky; avoid picking, keep the skin moisturised, and use a gentle cleanser. Overall recovery is typically three to four days. Improvements in texture and tone can appear soon after the first session, but results are cumulative, with the most significant changes usually seen six to eight weeks after treatment. Results vary between individuals.

Aftercare

Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun for several weeks after treatment. Avoid sun exposure on the day of your session, resume sunscreen after 24 hours, and minimise sun exposure for at least 72 hours to prevent unwanted pigmentation. Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours to allow the skin barrier to heal and reduce infection risk. Skip skincare with active ingredients such as retinol, alpha hydroxy acids and vitamin C for five days, and avoid sweating or heat-generating activity for 24 hours. Avoid other skin treatments or cosmetic injectable procedures for two weeks before or after your session.

Preparing for your appointment

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanners for at least 24 hours before treatment, and ideally for a week either side; treating recently sun-exposed skin can cause pigmentation changes. Avoid chemical peels, laser procedures and other invasive skin treatments for two weeks before and after, and stop certain prescription retinoid creams one week either side, as advised by your practitioner. Come with the area clean and free of lotion, makeup and sunscreen, and let your provider know about any tattoos, including cosmetic tattooing, near the treatment area. Avoid waxing for two weeks either side, avoid blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory medications for two to five days beforehand unless medically directed, and limit vigorous exercise and alcohol in the 24 hours before your session.

Who it suits

SkinPen suits adults seeking improvement in scarring, fine lines, pigmentation and overall skin quality. You may not be a suitable candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have open sores or irritated skin, an allergy to stainless steel, a bleeding disorder, or are currently taking certain prescription acne medications. Please inform the clinic if any of these apply. A consultation determines suitability and tailors the treatment to your skin.
